Louvre Sculpture Courts

In 1984, in parallel with Rice Francis Ritchie’s involvement with La Villette and the Louvre Pyramid, Peter Rice of Arup invited Ian Ritchie Architects to help conceive and develop the structure and glazing designs for 6000m2 of new roofs to create the three new sculpture courts of The Louvre - Cours Khorsabad, Marly and Puget - proposed by I M Pei & Partners in association with Macary.

These roof designs have integrated structure and glazing to create a shadow tempered environment, together with a ‘virtual curved surface’ which provides a sense of enclosure while permitting natural lighting of the new galleries.

The project was completed in 1992.
