DAPA/CABE judging

In the context of the Franco-British Initiative jointly promoted by the “direction de l’architecture et du patrimoine” (DAPA) of the French cultural ministry and the “Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment”(CABE), the French part of this affordable/social housing competition has been launched, the “Atelier de Definition”.

It allows for the experimentation of good practice in affordable housing and for competitors and clients to establish a dialogue informing the programme. It is open to joint French and British teams who are registered in their respective places of practice and have the authority to practise architecture in one or both countries.

Atelier Seraji (architecture and urbanism) on behalf of DAPA has been selected and commissioned to coordinate and manage this new competition format “Atelier de definition”.

Four distinct sites have been selected for the French phase of this Initiative; they are all within the perimeter of SENART, just south of Paris.

Documentation on each of the 4 sites can be consulted on the web: www.unite-initiative.com

A two-stage competition

Stage one
The first stage of the selection process is the identification of a shortlist of three teams per site and therefore a total of twelve joint teams for all four sites. The shortlist will receive a preliminary brief allowing them to prepare for stage two. Jerome Berteloot from Ian Ritchie’s office represented CABE at this first stage.

Stage two
The short listed joint teams will take part in a two-day workshop grouping the various parties involved (clients, municipality representatives, municipal urbanisms, etc…)
These workshops will allow for the final brief of the competition to be determined collaboratively – an innovative way to involve dialogues between architects and clients from day one – these workshops will be followed by an oral presentation of the teams’ suggestions and Sketch design for the proposed sites. Ian Ritchie will be a member of the jury that will select the finalists who may then enter into negotiations of a contract with the respective clients.
