Leipzig Glass Hall – Happy 21st Birthday

Leipzig Glass Hall, the centrepiece of the new Leipzig’s Exhibitions Fair was inaugurated on 12th April 1996, by the German President Roman Herzog.
After a two year construction period the project of one million sqm with an overall value of 1.3 billion Deutsch Marks was completed on schedule.

Masterplanners and architects Von Gerkan Marg invited Ian Ritchie Architects to conceive and design the Glass Hall, the largest single volume glass enclusure in the world.

Working with Mero and Seele Ian Ritchie Architects introduced several innovations – and designed a steel structure 250m long, 80m wide and 30m high with no expansion joints, no cross bracing and 5000m2 end walls as independent cantilevers. It looks as good as the day it was built 21 years ago.
