Ian Ritchie was elected chairman of the jury for the national architecture awards and for XXV Czech Architects Grand Prix which were announced at the Architectural Gala in Prague Castle state rooms – part of the 100th Anniversary of the foundation of independent Czechoslovakia.
His fellow judges were Ms Marta Schreick from Austria, Mr Juraj Benetin from Slovakia, Mr Hindrek Kesler from Estonia and Mr Frantaisek Skála from the Czech Republic. The awards are promoted by The Society of Czech Architects whose current Chairman is Oleg Haman.
The 2018 Grand Prix for Architecture has been awarded to the Sporadical studio for the new sports hall at Dolní Břežany primary school.
Judges said the rounded, ellipsoidal building, which mirrors its surroundings, cleverly masks its true dimensions, and internally was elegant, simple, and had a beautiful quality of light and acoustic.
More than 160 studios with over 200 projects built in the Czech Republic between January 2017 and March 2018 had been entered in the 25th year of the competition. The five-member international jury had initially selected 42 finalists.
