We are delighted to announce that LBTH granted planning permission 08.07.2019, for the Mile End East Estate development of 142 units with upgraded landscaping.
The design has close to 80% affordable homes and is the basis of the planning decision. This is a wonderful achievement and will allow much needed homes to be built and sets an extraordinary benchmark for affordable housing provision.
Although often mentioned, we believe that this is also the first development to receive planning permission in London for such an extensive rooftop development of an estate.
The development will progress in three phases, and Ian Ritchie Architects Ltd (iRAL) will be appointed by Gracewood to take the project from planning permission through to completion.
iRAL has always been keen to contribute its skills to social housing – however our only opportunity up to now was with the Scottish Homes of Tomorrow, realised with Thenew Housing Association in Glasgow in 1999.
The site is an existing housing estate, 11 apartments will be developed from disused garage spaces, 3 apartments created within an existing circulation void, with the remaining 128 apartments built on the roofs of the existing buildings.
This success follows closely on the heels of iRAL and the client team achieving planning permission for 151 apartments on Metropolitan Open Land in Bromley.
